SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – In a daring display of bravery and quick thinking, Sarasota Police officers managed to capture an armed juvenile during a Juneteenth event on Saturday, June 22. The incident occurred near the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Dixie Avenue.
Two Sarasota Police officers, working in tandem with the Sarasota Police Drone Unit, noticed a group of teenagers within the Juneteenth event footprint. Some of the individuals were wearing ski masks on their heads, raising suspicions of potential criminal activity. Recognizing the tell-tale signs of an armed individual, the officers decided to conduct a Terry stop. Despite verbal commands, one of the juveniles attempted to flee the scene. The officers swiftly deployed a Taser, effectively subduing the suspect.
The apprehended individual was identified as a 15-year-old male. Upon further investigation, a loaded and chambered .40 caliber firearm was discovered hidden in the suspect’s underwear. It was later revealed that the firearm had been stolen from a locked vehicle in Sarasota County in 2021.
Chief Rex Troche commended the officers for their prompt and decisive actions, emphasizing the importance of ensuring community safety during significant celebrations like Juneteenth. “The presence of armed children is unacceptable, and our officers are committed to removing firearms from the hands of minors to maintain the safety of our city,” Chief Troche stated.
The juvenile suspect is currently facing multiple charges, including resisting without violence, possession of a firearm by a felony delinquent, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm by a minor (second offense), and violation of probation.
