PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Two migrants were apprehended in Port Charlotte for their alleged involvement in a series of organized shoplifting incidents across Florida, according to authorities.
On Tuesday afternoon, deputies received a tip from a vigilant Burlington employee reporting suspicious activity involving two Hispanic women. Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officers caught the suspects red-handed as they were loading approximately $400 worth of stolen merchandise into a 2024 Hyundai Tucson bearing California license plates.
The two women were identified as 34-year-old Carla Stephany Soto Araneda and 33-year-old Genesi Michael Flores Reyes.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, deputies discovered a significant amount of clothing items with tags from popular retail outlets such as Marshall’s and Ross. Additionally, they recovered tools commonly used to remove anti-theft devices.
After towing the vehicle to an impound lot, authorities obtained a search warrant and conducted a thorough inspection, unearthing over $6,000 worth of stolen goods from various stores.
The stolen merchandise included items valued at $6,255.95, with the women pilfering $417.77 from Burlington, $2,703.86 from Marshall’s, and $3,134.32 from Ross.
Both Araneda and Reyes were transported to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office for questioning, during which they reportedly confessed to their crimes.
Further investigation revealed that the duo had travelled from California to Florida, making stops in cities such as Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, and Miami. It was also discovered that both women were residing in the country illegally.
Currently, Araneda and Reyes are being detained in Charlotte County, and Border Patrol authorities have been notified of their status.
