South Carolina legislators have given their approval to the state’s next budget, which is now awaiting final sign-off from the governor. The budget includes provisions for road and bridge improvements, tax cuts, and raises for teachers and state employees.
Representative Bruce Bannister, chair of the House’s budget-writing Ways and Means Committee, described the budget as a comprehensive plan that addresses the needs and priorities of the state’s residents. The $13 billion spending plan now heads to the governor’s desk for final approval.
Among the key highlights of the budget are funds allocated to accelerate cuts to the state’s highest income tax rate and to increase teachers’ starting salaries to a minimum of £47,000. Additionally, the budget fully supports two major university projects: South Carolina’s first veterinary school at Clemson and the new medical school campus at the University of South Carolina.
Significant investments are also earmarked for bridge repairs, rural water and sewer improvements, and local road maintenance. Senate Finance Committee Chair Harvey Peeler emphasised the importance of efficient allocation of funds for transportation infrastructure projects.
While the budget received widespread approval from legislators, members of the ultra-conservative Freedom Caucus expressed dissenting views. Representative Jordan Pace highlighted the need for greater transparency and a more conservative approach to budgeting in the future.
Governor’s vetoes are expected in the coming days, but lawmakers anticipate the budget to be signed and in effect before the start of the new fiscal year. Contingency plans are in place to ensure government operations continue smoothly if the budget is not finalised by July 1.
