Missouri City, Texas (KTRK) – Following a tragic incident last week, a Missouri City police officer has been relieved of duty after being involved in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of a mother and her son, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The victims have been identified as 53-year-old Angela Stewart, a dedicated Houston ISD counselor, and her 16-year-old son Mason Stewart.

The tragic incident occurred when the Missouri City police car collided with the Stewarts’ vehicle on June 20 in the 1600 block of Cartwright Road. The officer was responding to a call of a robbery in progress at the time of the crash.

According to reports, a man armed with a handgun had robbed a victim of $200 before fleeing in a silver Honda Civic. The victim, in turn, pursued the suspect while communicating with 911.

As the officer was heading eastbound on Cartwright Road, the Stewarts pulled out of a Dollar Tree parking lot, resulting in the fatal collision. Mason, who had recently obtained his driver’s license, was behind the wheel at the time of the accident. Tragically, both he and his mother lost their lives at the scene.

Family members revealed that it was Mason’s 16th birthday, making the loss even more heartbreaking.

The officer involved in the crash was taken to a hospital for treatment but was discharged shortly after. Witnesses described the harrowing scene, recounting how the police cruiser collided with the victims’ vehicle, resulting in a fiery crash. Authorities later discovered a person in the back of the patrol car, prompting questions about the circumstances surrounding their presence.

An investigation is ongoing to determine why the individual was in the cruiser and why it took a significant amount of time to locate them. The person was subsequently transported to a hospital for assessment, with their condition remaining unknown.

Police are also looking into whether the officer had activated the cruiser’s lights and sirens prior to the fatal collision, as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The Missouri City police department stated that the officer had been with the force for less than a year, having previously served in another agency for around two years. In light of the incident, the officer has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
