Man Arrested for Stealing Phone to Pay Off Online Gambling Debt in Cebu City

A 27-year-old man found himself behind bars after allegedly snatching a mobile phone from a woman while at a stoplight along General Maxilom Avenue in Brgy. Lorega San Miguel, Cebu City, early on Wednesday morning, June 26.

The suspect, identified as Andres Boni Naces, a resident of Sitio Ponce 1, Brgy. Carreta, Cebu City, reportedly confessed to committing the crime in order to settle a substantial debt accrued from gambling on an online casino platform.

The incident took place around 5:30 a.m. when the victim, a 25-year-old woman, was using her mobile phone while seated on a motorcycle that was stopped at a traffic light. Naces allegedly approached from behind, snatched the phone, and fled the scene before the victim could react.

Despite the victim’s efforts to chase him down, Naces managed to escape. The victim promptly reported the incident to personnel at the Parian Police Station around 8:30 p.m., leading to Naces’ identification and subsequent arrest during a hot-pursuit operation at 11:00 p.m. on the same day.

During interrogation, Naces admitted to the authorities that financial desperation drove him to commit the theft, as he was grappling with a significant debt resulting from his online gambling activities.

As of the latest update, Naces remains in custody at the police station’s detention facility. Police Major Marvin Fegarido, chief of the Parian Police Station, confirmed that a theft charge has been filed against the suspect.

Increased Scrutiny on Online Gambling-Related Crimes

This incident sheds light on the potential dangers of online gambling, particularly in cases where individuals resort to criminal activities to settle their debts. The allure of quick and easy money through online gambling can often lead to financial ruin and desperate actions, as seen in Naces’ case.

Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and restraint when engaging in online gambling activities, emphasizing the importance of responsible gaming practices and seeking help if struggling with addiction or debt.

As the investigation continues, the case serves as a stark reminder of the repercussions of unchecked online gambling behavior and the need for greater awareness and support for individuals facing gambling-related challenges.
