Accident – Death – Obituary News :
Agali: Another heartbreaking case of a sickle cell anemia-related death has been reported in Attapadi, marking the third fatality in the region within the past 30 days. The victim, 10-year-old Amritha Lakshmi, was a bright third-grade student at Agali Government LP School.
Medical Emergency
On Wednesday morning, at 8:30 a.m., Amritha was rushed to Kottathara Taluk Tribal Specialty Hospital after being found unconscious. Tragically, doctors at the hospital confirmed her death. The Agali police later transferred her body to the Palakkad District Hospital Mortuary for further procedures. Following the postmortem examination, the body was released to the family for funeral rites.
Previous Fatalities
This recent tragedy follows the deaths of two other individuals in Attapadi on May 31st. The deceased were identified as Soumya (25) and Valli (26), the latter of whom had a congenital anomaly. The surge in fatalities due to sickle cell disease has raised concerns among the local community.
Family Struggle
Amritha Lakshmi is survived by her parents, Vellinkari and Kaliyamma, along with five siblings. Shockingly, her mother and four of her siblings, including Manikandan (9), Shivakami (12), Krishnaveni (6), and Meenakshi (5), are also battling sickle cell disease. Despite showing no symptoms other than body pain, the disease has taken a devastating toll on the family.
Sickle Cell Anemia Crisis
Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells, causing them to become deformed and clump together. In Attapadi, a staggering 224 tribal individuals have been diagnosed with this debilitating condition. Treatment typically involves the use of a drug called hydroxyurea, which helps manage the symptoms and complications of sickle cell disorder.
Urgent Need for Support
If left untreated, sickle cell anemia can be life-threatening. Unfortunately, there are currently no specific initiatives in Attapadi aimed at identifying and supporting individuals with the disease. The recent spate of deaths underscores the urgent need for increased awareness, resources, and medical interventions to address the sickle cell anemia crisis in the region.
