The Palestinian community in Lebanon is now bracing for the possibility of facing a similar fate if Israel escalates its conflict with the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
Hezbollah wasted no time in retaliating against Israel once the latter initiated its assault on Gaza, resulting in a devastating toll of over 37,000 casualties and mass displacement. The Lebanese group has made it clear that it will cease its attacks on Israel once a ceasefire is established in Gaza and Israel halts its bombardment.
The recent escalation of violence followed a surprise attack by Hamas on Israeli communities and military outposts on October 7, resulting in the loss of 1,139 lives and the capture of 250 individuals.
In the Shatila Palestinian refugee camp, individuals involved in resistance movements have expressed their unwavering support for Hezbollah and the broader “axis of resistance” against Israel in the region. While they display courage in the face of conflict, they express deep concern for the safety of their families and fellow civilians. There is a prevailing fear that Israel may deliberately target densely populated residential areas in Lebanon, such as the Palestinian camps, where tens of thousands of people reside in close quarters.
Ahed Mahar, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command [PFLP-GC] in Shatila, voiced his distrust in the ethical conduct of the Israeli army, condemning their disregard for human rights and children’s well-being. He highlighted the possibility of Israel resorting to retaliatory actions driven by a thirst for vengeance.
Presently, around 250,000 Palestinians reside in 12 refugee camps scattered across Lebanon, having been displaced from their homeland by Zionist militias during the establishment of Israel in 1948, a tragic event known as the Nakba or “catastrophe”. The enduring desire of Palestinians to return to their homeland is deeply ingrained, as expressed by Hassan Abu Ali, a resident of Shatila.
In the event of a major conflict, Abu Ali envisions hastily gathering a few possessions and heading towards the border between Lebanon and Israel with his mother in a bid to return to Palestine. The prospect of a war-induced displacement raises concerns about limited options for Palestinians, who face legal discrimination and poverty in Lebanon.
The potential destruction of the camps in Lebanon could leave Palestinians with no alternative but to seek refuge in Palestine or Europe, a costly and perilous journey that many cannot afford. Despite the challenges, the resolve among Palestinians to reclaim their homeland remains steadfast.
In Shatila, Palestinian men have expressed their readiness to partake in armed resistance against Israel should a broader conflict with Hezbollah ensue. Drawing parallels with historical struggles for independence, they emphasise the willingness to sacrifice for the liberation of Palestine.
While acknowledging the risks posed to civilians, particularly vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, some Palestinians view their sacrifices as a necessary price to pay for freedom. Fadi Abu Ahmad, a member of Hamas in the camp, highlights the defiance prevalent among Palestinians, underscoring their belief that their blood is a testament to their commitment to the cause.
Despite the looming threats from Israel, many Palestinians remain sceptical of a full-scale war on Lebanon, citing the formidable deterrence posed by Hezbollah’s military capabilities. The group’s reported possession of advanced weaponry, including Iranian-made guided missiles and drones, serves as a deterrent against Israeli escalation.
However, concerns persist that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may opt for a war in Lebanon to appease his far-right coalition partners and maintain political power. The potential consequences of such a conflict, including civilian casualties and widespread devastation, are a source of apprehension for Palestinians in Lebanon.
Reflecting on past conflicts, the Palestinian community anticipates a different outcome in the event of a war between Hezbollah and Israel. The 2006 conflict, marked by Hezbollah’s capture of Israeli soldiers and subsequent Israeli retaliation, resulted in significant civilian casualties in Lebanon. This time, there is a prevailing fear that the Palestinian camps may become targets of Israeli aggression, reflecting a lack of restraint in Israeli actions.
As tensions escalate and the spectre of war looms large, Palestinians in Lebanon brace themselves for an uncertain future, marked by the enduring struggle for freedom and the relentless pursuit of justice against the backdrop of geopolitical turmoil..
