Sumaya Thomas : “US Woman, 18, Arrested for Fake 911 Call to Avoid Date”

An 18-year-old woman in the United States has been taken into custody for allegedly misusing the emergency services by calling 911 to avoid a date with a man she connected with on a dating app. According to The Independent, the woman, identified as Sumaya Thomas, found herself in trouble after claiming to authorities that her former abusive partner was outside her residence, sending threatening messages. She alleged that the man had intentions of physically harming her.

Ms Thomas was apprehended on June 16 on charges of providing false information to law enforcement, which are classified as misdemeanour offences, as per The Independent. In her statements to the police, the 18-year-old also mentioned being pregnant with her ex-boyfriend’s child, with most of their interactions occurring on the social media platform Snapchat.

However, upon reaching the scene, officers observed the man leaving the premises. He informed the authorities that he had only started conversing with the woman a week earlier on a dating app, subsequently transitioning to text messages. The man cooperated with the police by presenting the text conversations and dating app interactions, which confirmed their communication.

The man was held for more than an hour due to the unfounded accusations. It wasn’t until a third round of questioning that Ms Thomas confessed to fabricating the story out of nervousness about meeting him and changing her mind. “She admitted that she concocted the call and the incidents described because she didn’t believe the police would assist her,” stated the police report.

Ms Thomas was arrested last week and later released from the Johnson County Jail in Iowa.
