Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A tragic incident in Topeka has left a community in mourning, as a woman taken into custody following the death of her 9-year-old son has also passed away, according to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office.

Shyla Goracke, 29, was arrested and hospitalized on June 20 after sheriff’s deputies responded to her home on SW Worwick Town Road. They found her son, Zerick I. Ozuna, deceased with wounds to his neck and chest.

The sheriff’s office confirmed Goracke’s death on Monday, although no further details have been released at this time.

Young Zerick was a rising fourth-grader at Farley Elementary in Topeka, part of the Auburn-Washburn United School District 437. The district administrators shared a heartfelt tribute online, describing him as a kind and curious student who loved animals and had a talent for playing Uno.

His third-grade teacher, Bobbi Hamman, also remembered him fondly, praising his writing skills and his ability to be a great friend to his classmates. The district staff expressed how much Zerick was loved and valued by both students and staff members.

Furthermore, Zerick was an active participant in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Topeka, attending both the Montara and Farley locations. The club described him as a creative and kind-hearted boy who was always ready to help others with his inventive solutions.

Prior to the tragic events, Goracke was the proud owner of Mutt’Staches Mobile Grooming in Topeka, as reported by The Star. She had closed her business just one day before her son’s untimely passing, citing personal reasons.

An autopsy was conducted on Zerick on June 21, although Goracke had not been charged in Shawnee County court prior to her own death. Shawnee police have not publicly classified either of the deaths as homicides.
