A Sparta man, Shawn Hawk, has been sentenced to 53 years in prison and 20 years of extended supervision for the death of a woman as a result of domestic abuse in 2022. The sentencing took place on June 26, 2024, in Monroe County Circuit Court.
Hawk, aged 34, pleaded guilty to first-degree reckless homicide on March 11, 2024, as a repeat offender of domestic abuse. The victim, Sara Latimer, was killed in May of 2022.
Following the incident, the Sparta Police Department initiated an investigation into the death of a woman, who was later identified as 32-year-old Sara Latimer of Sparta. The preliminary autopsy report revealed that Latimer died of blunt force trauma due to multiple head and facial injuries, which were visible as large bruises and swelling. Additionally, Latimer had injuries on her arms and legs that were consistent with defensive wounds.
Investigators stated that Hawk had a history of violence against Latimer, with previous domestic abuse convictions in 2020 and 2021 where Latimer was the victim. Despite the evidence presented, Hawk denied any involvement in Latimer’s death, claiming he did not know how she suffered the injuries.
This tragic case highlights the devastating impact of domestic abuse and the importance of recognising and addressing such issues within our communities. The sentencing of Shawn Hawk serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of such violent behaviour.
