Accident – Death – Obituary News :

There have been numerous reports of seagulls being shot along the north Wales coast, according to North Wales Police. The police have issued a warning stating that it is illegal to deliberately kill, injure, or take gulls, except under licence. These reported incidents have occurred in Denbighshire and Abergele, with the use of an air rifle in these circumstances potentially constituting a firearms offence. In addition to shootings, nets used by the gulls have also been destroyed.

Despite being considered a nuisance by some, gulls’ numbers are actually in decline. Herring gulls, the most commonly identified species as seagulls, have been on a protected list since 2009. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, all wild birds in the UK, including gulls, are protected. It is also illegal to destroy their nests or steal their eggs.

A recent study found that herring gulls were one of 11 groups experiencing a decrease in population between 2002 and 2021. More than 51,000 pairs of herring gulls nesting at natural sites were lost during this period, resulting in a 41% decline in the population. Rebecca Machin, from the animal charity RSPCA, highlighted that herring gulls are a species of conservation concern in the UK.

She emphasized that these intelligent animals form strong social bonds with each other and deserve to be treated with respect. Despite negative opinions towards them, gulls play a crucial role in the ecosystem and should be protected.
