ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The family of a 5-year-old girl who was shot by a Douglas County deputy during a suspect chase has enlisted the services of nationally renowned civil rights attorneys in their quest for justice. Attorneys Ben Crump and Bakari Sellers have been retained by the child’s family and are exploring all potential avenues, including the possibility of filing a civil lawsuit, as stated in a recent release.

Crump and Sellers are also urging for the deputy involved in the shooting, who has not been publicly named, to be dismissed from their position.

In a statement, Crump expressed his dismay at the deputy’s actions, stating, “I don’t know what action movie this deputy thought he was in, but that kind of callous disregard for basic safety gets innocent people killed in the real world. Recklessness and negligence aren’t strong enough to describe what he did. He is a clear danger and he must be held accountable.”

The incident took place at a BP gas station in Fulton County, located just off of I-20.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the deputy attempted to apprehend a suspect, later identified as Rashauny Mike Palmer, 25, who was subsequently arrested by the Dallas Police Department but managed to escape. The GBI reported that Palmer tried to carjack a BMW, prompting the deputy to open fire on the vehicle.

Tragically, the child, her mother, and another adult were present in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. The GBI disclosed that the child sustained injuries from a “small ricocheting fragment” from one of the deputy’s bullets.

Following the incident, the child was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

Palmer now faces a host of charges in connection with the altercation.

This recent shooting episode marks the 36th time that the GBI has been called upon to investigate an officer-involved shooting in 2024.
