The heartbreaking incident was the culmination of a longstanding family dispute between a man and his father-in-law, which took a deadly turn yesterday.
Penprapa sustained critical injuries after being struck by a gunshot that penetrated her back, collarbone, and neck. Despite the valiant efforts of the rescue team to perform CPR and rush her to the hospital, she tragically succumbed to her wounds.
The shooting took place in close proximity to the reservoir, with a white Mitsubishi pickup truck becoming the focal point of the attack. The vehicle was hit by two bullets, one in the rear bed and another through the back window, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.
Accompanied by 42-year-old Thongchai Butthong, Penrapa was on her way to their accommodation when the perpetrator, riding a motorcycle, passed by and unleashed a barrage of gunfire at their vehicle. Thongchai, a close friend of Penrapa’s father-in-law, speculated that the attack was fueled by a deep-seated grudge held by the assailant against his father-in-law. Unfortunately, Penprapa found herself caught in the crossfire of the family feud, becoming an unintended victim of the tragic altercation.
Recounting the events leading up to the shooting, Thongchai revealed that the father-in-law had previously faced threats from his son-in-law, who had even brandished a gun in a menacing manner. Despite Thongchai’s attempts to defuse the escalating tensions, the situation continued to simmer, ultimately erupting in a violent outburst that claimed the life of an innocent bystander.
During the investigation at the crime scene, police recovered three .380-calibre shell casings, shedding light on the intensity of the attack. One of the workers who was present in the truck bed, 18-year-old Nattapong Khwanrapsuan, described the terrifying ordeal, recounting how the shooter pursued them on a motorcycle before opening fire indiscriminately. In a desperate bid to escape the hail of bullets, Nattapong leapt out of the truck, only realizing later the grave extent of the injuries inflicted upon Penprapa.
Surveillance footage capturing the chilling incident revealed the group’s futile attempts to evade the assailant as he pursued them on his motorcycle, firing shots before fleeing the scene. The gunman, identified as Meng, has been pinpointed by the authorities, with ongoing efforts to apprehend him and ensure that justice is served for the senseless loss of life.
