BORDENTOWN, NJ – The community of Bordentown, New Jersey, is reeling from a tragic incident that occurred at a local day camp. Two days after the heartbreaking drowning of 6-year-old Michael Stewart, authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the young boy’s death.
Michael Stewart tragically lost his life on the first day of camp during a free swim session for campers entering first and second grade. His devastated mother, Enjoli Stewart, shared her grief with FOX 29, expressing her deep sorrow over the loss of her son.
Following the incident, Liberty Lake Summer Day Camp took steps to honour Michael’s memory by closing the shallow pool where the tragedy occurred. Despite reopening the pool the following day, the camp’s director, Andy Pritikin, addressed parents in a virtual meeting to provide details of the incident.
Pritikin explained that Michael was under the supervision of an adult leader, two teen counselors, and three adult advocates for children with special needs, one of whom was specifically assigned to Michael. The drowning took place in the shallow end of a 20-foot-wide pool, which exceeded state-mandated lifeguard ratios.
In response to the tragedy, the camp has implemented new safety measures, including mandatory water supervision for staff in certain divisions and regular buddy checks to ensure the well-being of all campers.
The local community has rallied around Michael’s family, with fundraisers and support initiatives in place to help them through this difficult time. Lumberton Township Police Lodge 201 has partnered with Johnny Longhots, a local restaurant, to raise funds for the Stewart family. Customers can contribute by mentioning “Lumberton Strong” when placing an order or donating to the collection jars in the restaurant.
Michael was a beloved student at Lumberton School District, where he was set to enter first grade. The district released a statement expressing their deepest condolences to the family and announced plans for a lemonade stand fundraiser to support the Stewarts.
