A 32-year-old woman, Margot Lewis, who was previously charged with hiding the body of Minneapolis woman Liara Tsai, 35, has now been charged with her murder. Lewis is facing two counts of second-degree murder and is currently being held at Olmsted County Jail.
The charges were filed via warrant with a request for Lewis to be transferred to Hennepin County Jail. The case unfolded when Olmsted County deputies responded to a crash on I-90 in Eyota around 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning. Upon arrival, they found Lewis, the driver, sitting in a lawn chair in the median.
According to court documents, two good Samaritans who stopped to help after the crash reported seeing a deceased person in the back seat of the sedan. The body, identified as Tsai, was wrapped in bedding, a mattress, and a tarp, with a visible puncture wound to the neck. It was evident to deputies that Tsai did not die as a result of the crash.
It was revealed that Tsai and Lewis were former romantic partners. The Minnesota State Patrol determined that the sedan was traveling at approximately 105 mph at the time of the crash. Tsai, the registered owner of the vehicle, had her dog wandering outside near the crash scene.
Further investigation led Minneapolis police and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to execute a search warrant at Tsai’s apartment, where they discovered her bed saturated with blood. A bloody plastic and metal object were found on the bed, along with items commonly found in a car trunk, such as antifreeze and a small shovel, placed on a table. Additionally, a single steak knife was missing from the apartment’s butcher block.
Following her medical clearance after the crash, Lewis was booked into Olmsted County Jail. She remained unresponsive to verbal questions and communicated through sign language, as she had taken a vow of silence. Upon arrival at the Sheriff’s Office, Lewis displayed emotional distress, crying and exhibiting uncooperative behavior during evidence collection.
Tsai’s former spouse disclosed that Tsai had planned for Lewis to visit between June 21-29, as indicated by an airline flight tag found in the crashed car. Surveillance footage from the airport showed Tsai picking up Lewis upon arrival. The relationship between Tsai and Lewis was described as “sordid and emotionally challenging.”
Surveillance video from outside Tsai’s apartment captured her vehicle departing around 4:37 a.m. on the day of the crash, with the driver dressed similarly to Lewis at the time of the accident. The footage also showed Tsai’s dog seated in the car’s front seat.
