Three young males, including two teenagers and one young adult, have been charged in connection with the alleged theft of a Ford F-250 Super Duty truck from a garage in Mexico, Oxford County. The incident sparked a two-day search by law enforcement agencies in Franklin County.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a report of a stolen vehicle from Oxford County that was spotted in Rangeley Plantation at around 5:25 a.m. on Tuesday. The stolen truck, which had been undergoing repair work following a moose accident, was discovered parked at the Height of Land overlook area by a man driving a tractor-trailer.
Upon recognizing the truck as belonging to his boss, the tractor-trailer driver approached two young males who were with the vehicle. However, the suspects fled in the truck, leaving it overheated on the side of the road. The driver later found the abandoned truck near South Shore Drive, but the individuals had escaped into the woods.
A search operation involving the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Border Patrol, and other agencies was launched and continued into the evening before being called off. The suspects, identified as a 24-year-old male from Rumford, a 16-year-old from Mexico, and a 14-year-old with previous juvenile conditions, were eventually located.
The 24-year-old, Logan Smith, was charged and released to a caregiver by Mexico police, while the 16-year-old was charged and released to his family. The 14-year-old was taken to a juvenile detention facility. Sheriff Nichols praised the collaborative efforts of all agencies involved in the operation.
