The victim, who sustained serious injuries, was swiftly taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment, according to a police spokesman.
Following the incident, a 25-year-old male suspect was apprehended on Friday, June 21, and has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Appearing before the court for the first time yesterday morning, the accused was remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.
Legal proceedings and potential penalties
The man, who faces a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment, is scheduled to appear in the Manukau District Court on Tuesday, July 16, for his next hearing.
Victim’s harrowing account
Speaking from his hospital bed, the victim recounted the terrifying ordeal he experienced. “When I first got attacked, I thought he was just punching me. But then I saw the blood flowing down and realised I had been stabbed,” he said.
Desperate for help, the victim ran across the road and sought assistance from passing vehicles. Fortunately, several drivers responded by sounding their horns and yelling at the attacker.
One compassionate driver eventually allowed the victim into his car. “Please lock the door and save me,” the victim pleaded as he bled profusely, leaving blood marks on the car window and seat.
Fears and nightmares
Having lived in New Zealand for 30 years, the victim expressed a deep sense of insecurity following the incident. He no longer feels safe in Auckland and requested anonymity out of fear of potential reprisals.
“I still get recurring nightmares about what happened,” the victim revealed, highlighting the lasting trauma of the assault.
