Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Authorities in Vancouver, UK, have released video footage of a fatal police shooting that occurred last Monday on Northeast Andresen Road. The incident marked the second deadly shooting involving the Vancouver Police Department in less than two weeks.

Details of the Incident

According to reports from the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), the incident unfolded when an officer was flagged down by three individuals parked behind a McDonald’s on Northeast Andresen Road. The individuals informed the officer that a man, later identified as 40-year-old Jonathan West Nelson, had brandished a gun after a brief altercation with them.

The victims described Nelson as wearing all-black attire, including a mask and sunglasses. Following the confrontation, Nelson continued walking south on Andresen.

Police Response and Confrontation

VPD officers located Nelson at the intersection with Northeast 25th Street and attempted to apprehend him. Despite repeated commands to stop, Nelson ignored the officers and continued walking along the sidewalk. Officers followed him for several minutes at a slow pace.

As captured in the video footage, an officer warned Nelson over a PA system that police would resort to using a K9 unit and a 40mm less-lethal launcher if he did not comply. Subsequently, a K9 unit was deployed to apprehend Nelson.

Use of Force

During the confrontation, Nelson reached into his pocket and retrieved what appeared to be a handgun. Despite efforts to subdue him, Nelson waved the gun, prompting four Vancouver police officers to open fire. The video shows the officers firing their weapons as Nelson struggled with the K9 unit.

After the gunfire ceased, Nelson was found motionless on the ground. Officers approached him and discovered a handgun, which was placed nearby, and a knife still gripped in Nelson’s left hand.

Investigation and Aftermath

Following the shooting, the four officers involved were placed on critical incident leave, and the SW Washington Independent Investigation Response Team (SWIIRT) began investigating the incident. The officers were identified as Sgt. James Kelly, Officer Jason Haigwood, Officer Justin Reiner, and Officer Philip Wilkening.

Aside from Nelson and the K9 unit, no other individuals were harmed during the incident. The police K9, named Remi, underwent surgery at an emergency veterinary hospital but was discharged on June 18 and is currently recovering.

The VPD expressed regret over the loss of life and emphasized their commitment to upholding the sanctity of human life and dignity in all circumstances.
