A tragic incident unfolded in Sioux City, Iowa, as police reported that a man was electrocuted while allegedly trying to steal copper wire. The incident took place at 2101 Court Street in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Authorities responded to a potential burglary in progress at approximately 4:20 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of 37-year-old Jerrod D. Schweitzberger, a resident of Sioux City. It was determined that Schweitzberger had been fatally shocked by an electrical source during his attempted theft.
Initial investigations revealed that Schweitzberger had broken into a property belonging to the Boys and Girls Home with the intention of pilfering copper wiring. Tragically, his actions led to a fatal encounter with a live electrical source, resulting in his untimely death.
Another individual, identified as 39-year-old Denair A. Byars from Sioux City, was also present at the scene. Byars has been charged with third-degree burglary, with court documents alleging his involvement in assisting Schweitzberger in the theft. Byars reportedly fled the scene after discovering Schweitzberger’s condition and sought help from a passerby to contact emergency services.
The Sioux City Police Department is collaborating with the property owner and other relevant parties to gather additional information and enhance safety measures in the vicinity. Authorities are urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward and aid in the ongoing investigation.
In a press release, the police emphasised the hazards associated with attempting to steal copper wiring and other metals. They underscored the importance of reporting any suspicious activities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
