SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV/Gray News) – Authorities in Iowa are investigating the death of a man who was electrocuted while apparently attempting to steal copper wire.
The incident took place at 2101 Court Street in Sioux City in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Police responded to a report of a possible burglary at around 4:20 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered 37-year-old Jerrod D. Schweitzberger, a resident of Sioux City, who had been fatally electrocuted by an electrical source. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was officially pronounced dead.
Initial investigations suggest that Schweitzberger had broken into a property owned by the Boys and Girls Home with the intention of stealing copper wiring. While attempting to remove the wiring, he inadvertently made contact with a live electrical source, resulting in the fatal electrocution.
Another individual, identified as 39-year-old Denair A. Byars, was also present at the scene. Byars has been charged with third-degree burglary for his alleged involvement in the theft. Court documents indicate that Byars was assisting Schweitzberger in stealing copper wire and other items from the facility when the electrocution occurred.
Following the tragic incident, the Sioux City Police Department is collaborating with the property owner and other relevant parties to gather additional information and enhance safety measures in the area.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with knowledge about the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
In a press release, the police highlighted the dangers associated with attempting to steal copper wiring and emphasised the importance of reporting suspicious activities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The investigation is still underway, and further details have not been released by the police at this time.
