Lewis & Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton provided insight into the events leading up to Gard’s untimely death. According to Sheriff Dutton, Gard went overboard while attempting to retrieve an oar that had fallen into the water. Despite the efforts of his friends to pull him back onto the boat, Gard was unable to be saved.
Following the incident, Gard was brought to the boat launch in Craig, where emergency responders attempted to revive him. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain, and Gard was pronounced dead at the scene.
