A somber atmosphere engulfed Phulbari upazila of Kurigram on Tuesday night as a tragic incident unfolded, claiming the life of a 62-year-old man. Ataur Rahman, the father of newly elected upazila vice-chairman Mehedi Hasan, met with a fatal accident after being struck by a speeding motorcycle.
The unfortunate event took place as Ataur Rahman was making his way back home after offering Isha prayers at the Upazila Health Complex mosque. While walking on the paved road, he was hit from behind by a motorcycle, causing him severe injuries.
Swift action by locals saw Ataur Rahman being promptly rescued and rushed to the nearby health complex for immediate medical attention. Dr Tanvir from the emergency department, upon assessing the critical condition of the victim, recommended his transfer to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Despite the best efforts of medical personnel at the hospital, Ataur Rahman succumbed to his injuries around 11:00pm, leaving his family and the community in shock and mourning.
Speaking on the incident, Fulbari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nawabur Rahman disclosed that the motorcycle involved in the accident was seized by vigilant locals. However, the rider, identified as Limon Mia and employed at Adi Motorcycle Mechanics at Phulbari Mohila Degree College intersection, managed to evade capture.
The tragic loss of Ataur Rahman serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving. The authorities have been urged to take necessary measures to prevent such accidents and ensure the safety of pedestrians and road users in the area.
