POCATELLO — Authorities in Idaho have confirmed the discovery of the body of a 49-year-old man in the Blackrock Canyon, located south of Pocatello. The man has been identified as Steven Smith, a resident of Pocatello. The Bannock County Sheriff’s Office released a statement indicating that the cause of death is suspected to be medically-related, pending further investigation. No foul play is believed to be involved in the incident.
It is reported that Smith ventured into the canyon on Saturday morning to inspect an ATV that had been wrecked a week prior. Concerned for his well-being, his friends went to check on him several hours later and tragically discovered his lifeless body. Emergency services were alerted to the situation on Sunday at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Search and rescue teams located Smith approximately a mile away from the Blackrock Canyon Trailhead. Due to the challenging terrain and poor visibility, the recovery operation was postponed until Monday morning. By midday, the body was safely retrieved.
Bannock County Sheriff Tony Manu expressed gratitude towards the dedicated volunteers from the Search and Rescue and Backcountry Rescue teams for their swift response and assistance in the operation. Their selfless efforts in aiding a member of the community in need are highly appreciated.
