Accident – Death – Obituary News : Residents of Xianqiao village in Guizhou province, China, were left in shock on Saturday as debris from a Chinese rocket fell over their rural community. The incident, which was captured in videos circulating on Chinese social media, showed a cylindrical piece of debris crashing near a hill with yellow smoke billowing from one end.

The dramatic event unfolded shortly after a Long March 2C carrier rocket was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province. The rocket was carrying the Space Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) satellite as part of a joint mission between China and France to study gamma-ray bursts.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has made China’s space program a top priority in order to establish the country as a leading space power. This mission was a significant part of China’s efforts to enhance its competitiveness in space exploration, particularly in competition with major global players like the United States.

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the state-owned contractor responsible for developing the Long March 2C rocket, hailed the launch as a “complete success.” However, eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion upon impact, with some villagers witnessing the rocket fall firsthand.

Rocket expert Markus Schiller highlighted that such incidents are not uncommon in China due to the geographical positioning of its launch sites. China operates several inland launch sites, including Xichang, Jiuquan, and Taiyuan, which were established during the Cold War for security reasons.

In contrast to China, NASA and the European Space Agency primarily conduct launches from coastal locations directed towards open ocean to minimize the risk of populated areas being affected by falling debris. Instances of rocket debris impacting villages in China have raised concerns about the safety of these missions and the handling of debris.

The international space community has previously criticized China for its handling of debris from out-of-control rocket boosters re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. In 2021, NASA condemned China for failing to adhere to responsible standards after debris from a Long March 5B rocket uncontrollably crashed into the Indian Ocean west of the Maldives following re-entry.

This incident has underscored the importance of implementing enhanced safety measures to protect both residents and the environment from the risks associated with rocket launches and debris. It serves as a reminder of the need for stringent safety protocols and practices in China’s space missions.
