A 15-year-old boy from Milwaukee, Noah Shotwell, is facing charges of reckless homicide in connection with a tragic shooting incident that took place at Washington Park on Juneteenth.

The incident resulted in the death of a 17-year-old boy, while Shotwell himself sustained gunshot wounds.

According to reports, a 911 caller alerted authorities about a large altercation involving approximately 50 youths at the park just before gunshots were heard around 9 p.m. The 17-year-old victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries from the gunshot wounds.

A deputy who was already patrolling in the vicinity due to a concert that had recently ended was able to respond swiftly to the shooting. However, organizers of the concert have clarified that the incident was not related to their event.

According to a criminal complaint, another suspect, identified as 17-year-old Onterio Girley, discharged a fully-automatic firearm into the crowd before fleeing the scene. Girley has been charged with multiple felonies but is not implicated in the homicide.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office deployed a drone to surveil the shooting incident. Prosecutors revealed that the drone footage captured two distinct groups near the playground prior to the gunfire. One group included Girley and the deceased victim, while the other consisted of two suspects, one of whom was later identified as Shotwell.

The drone video reportedly shows one suspect retrieving an object from his waistband and directing it towards the 17-year-old victim before a flash from the muzzle is visible. Subsequently, the victim collapses, and the suspect flees the scene. Shotwell then appears to produce an object from under his grey sweatshirt and aims it at the victim, resulting in two distinct muzzle flashes. Prosecutors allege that Girley then retrieved a weapon from the victim’s waistband and fired at the assailants.

Following the shooting, Shotwell was transported to a medical facility for treatment of his gunshot wound. Video footage from the hospital purportedly shows Shotwell wearing the same grey sweatshirt as the second assailant seen in the drone video from Washington Park.

During an interrogation with law enforcement, Shotwell reportedly confessed to shooting the victim who was on the ground. He identified himself as the individual seen in the drone footage and claimed that he fired at the 17-year-old victim because he believed the victim was armed. However, Shotwell admitted that the victim did not pose any direct threat to him and described the shooting as a “mistake.”
