A 32-year-old woman has been taken into custody after authorities discovered a deceased woman in the backseat of her car following a single-vehicle accident in Olmstead County, Minnesota. The incident, which occurred on Saturday morning on Interstate 90 eastbound near the Highway 42 Exit, has left the community in shock.
The Olmstead County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of the accident at around 7 a.m. and found Margot Lewis, the driver of the vehicle, being assisted by a passerby. Upon further inspection of the car, officers made the grim discovery of a deceased 35-year-old woman in the back seat. It was immediately evident that the woman’s death was not a result of the crash.
Authorities have chosen to withhold the identity of the deceased until her next of kin have been notified. Margot Lewis was then taken to the hospital by Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service for evaluation, where she was subsequently cleared medically. She was then transported to the Adult Detention Center and charged with Interference with a Dead Body.
Ms. Lewis is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday to face these charges. The Olmstead County Sheriff’s Office has expressed their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, as the investigation into the incident continues with the assistance of various agencies including the Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), Eyota Fire Department, and Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service.
