Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Virginia Board of Education has officially given the green light to the Aerospace Academy of the Eastern Shore (AAES), marking it as the 15th Lab School established under Governor Glenn Youngkin’s leadership. This announcement comes as a significant step towards expanding innovative educational opportunities for students and parents, empowering them to strive for excellence in the field of aerospace.

Governor Youngkin’s Vision

Expressing his enthusiasm for this new development, Governor Glenn Youngkin stated, “Together, we are expanding innovative educational opportunities for students and parents, empowering them to reach for the stars. Through this aerospace-focused lab school, students can develop the knowledge and skills to participate in Virginia’s growing aerospace and unmanned systems industry. The Aerospace Academy of the Eastern Shore not only provides an innovative learning environment for Virginia’s Eastern Shore students but also addresses a crucial economic need of the Commonwealth by creating an educated and trained workforce that meets the demands of the future. Congratulations to all who made this school a reality and who have created new, exciting opportunities for Virginia’s students.”

Partnerships and Collaboration

The AAES is a collaborative partnership between Old Dominion University, Eastern Shore Community College, Accomack County Public Schools, and Northampton County Public Schools. This partnership aims to provide students on the Eastern Shore with access to the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to be successful in STEM fields, particularly aerospace and related industries.

Economic Development Focus

AAES is expected to serve as the regional standard of excellence in preparation for high-tech jobs in the aerospace and unmanned systems industry. This aligns with the priorities set by the Economic Development Authority’s GO Virginia Region 5, highlighting the importance of preparing students for careers in high-growth fields.

Industry Partnerships

In addition to educational institutions, AAES has forged key partnerships with industry leaders such as NASA Wallops Flight Facility, the Hampton Roads Workforce Council, Virginia Spaceport Authority, Luminary Air Group, Sentinel Robotic Solutions, and Amazon. These partnerships are crucial in supporting the school’s initiatives and mission to prepare students for the aerospace workforce.

Pathways to Success

The school offers two pathways for students to enter the aerospace workforce: aerospace information and security systems, and aerospace engineering and explorations. Students will have the opportunity to engage in regional aerospace initiatives, participate in work-based learning experiences, develop an electronic portfolio, gain valuable job experience, and network with future employers. Additionally, students can earn college credits towards a Virginia Community College System Passport or Passport Plus, career studies certificates, and industry credentials and certifications.

Future of Education

Virginia Lab Schools are instrumental in developing innovative education programs for students from preschool through Grade 12. These schools collaborate with local employers and community organizations to expand career opportunities for students and provide exposure to workplaces. Lab Schools offer unique opportunities to help students understand career pathways for life after high school graduation.

Funding and Support

Under the current budget until June 30, 2024, the Commonwealth has dedicated funding and a statutory requirement to advance Lab School development. The Board’s approval of AAES continues to meet these requirements, offering students across the Commonwealth innovative opportunities for future success.
