Accident – Death – Obituary News : PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A 30-year-old man, Gerardo Vazquez Alvarez, has been sentenced to 42 years in prison for the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend, Maria Ledesma-Ramirez, at a Burger King in west Phoenix last year. The sentencing was announced by Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell on Tuesday.

The tragic incident took place at the Burger King located at 19th Avenue and Buckeye Road on April 12, 2023. Witnesses described how Alvarez entered the restaurant, ordered food, and then coldly shot Ledesma-Ramirez as she approached the counter. The violent act resulted in the death of the 25-year-old victim and critically injured a teenage coworker who was also present during the shooting.

Prior to the fatal encounter, Alvarez and Ledesma-Ramirez had been engaged in a heated argument over the phone regarding their relationship and children. The disagreement escalated to a deadly confrontation when Alvarez arrived at the Burger King armed with a .40 caliber handgun. Although he claimed he did not intend to kill his ex-girlfriend, he admitted to becoming enraged and firing the fatal shots.

In a chilling revelation, Alvarez confessed to investigators that he did not have any intention to harm Ledesma-Ramirez’s coworker, but she was unfortunately caught in the crossfire.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell expressed her dismay at the senseless loss of life caused by Alvarez’s actions, stating, “Not only did a young mother lose her life that night, but multiple young people were also put in harm’s way and will have to live with the trauma of what they saw and heard due to the defendant’s callous actions.”

During the court proceedings, Ledesma-Ramirez’s grieving parents shared poignant memories of their daughter, describing her as an exemplary mother who cherished her children above all else. They spoke of the immense void left by her absence and the lasting impact of her tragic death.

Alvarez pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and disorderly conduct on April 11. The severity of his crimes and the devastating consequences of his actions were reflected in the lengthy prison sentence imposed by the court.
