A man was taken into custody following an alarming incident at an El Cajon park that escalated into a high-speed chase, culminating at the San Diego Police Department headquarters. The El Cajon Police Department swiftly responded to reports of a male suspect causing a disturbance at Prescott Promenade, located at 200 E. Main Street in El Cajon in the early hours of Monday morning.
The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Gabriel Quijas from Spring Valley, allegedly menaced a person living in a tent at the park and intentionally drove his vehicle into the occupied tent on Sunday. As law enforcement officers were at the scene gathering information and statements from the victim around 5:50 a.m. on Monday, Quijas was spotted driving past in a Cadillac Escalade. Witnesses were able to positively identify him as the perpetrator.
El Cajon Police officers attempted to stop Quijas, but he evaded them and initiated a pursuit. Quijas led the police onto Interstate 8, driving at dangerously high speeds. At one point, he abruptly halted, almost causing a collision with a pursuing police vehicle. Furthermore, he allegedly tried to ram the police car and force it into the freeway’s concrete center divide barrier.
Subsequently, Quijas exited the freeway towards downtown San Diego, ultimately stopping in front of the San Diego Police headquarters at 1401 Broadway and abandoning his vehicle. Despite exiting his car, he reportedly ignored commands from officers, prompting them to utilize a police K-9 to assist in his apprehension.
Gabriel Quijas was subsequently taken into custody and booked into San Diego County Central Jail. He is facing multiple felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon on peace officers, and evading arrest with reckless disregard for safety.
