On the morning of June 23rd, 2024, Ottumwa Police received a distressing call reporting a structure fire in the 200 block of W. 5th Street. The caller mentioned that there were individuals trapped inside the burning residence, prompting a swift response from emergency services.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered that the fire had been deliberately started within the property. Tragically, two people were present inside the building when the blaze erupted. One individual managed to escape by climbing out of a third-floor window, while the other, identified as 59-year-old Ernest Wilson, was unable to flee and succumbed to the flames.

Arrest Made in Connection with Fatal Fire

Following a thorough investigation into the incident, Ottumwa Police arrested 31-year-old Ashley Lankford on June 24th at 9:10 am. Lankford has since been charged with Arson in the First Degree in relation to the fatal fire that claimed the life of Ernest Wilson.

The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to uncover the motives behind the arson attack and ensure that justice is served for the victim and their loved ones.
