(CNN) — A woman in Texas has been charged with attempted capital murder and injury to a child after attempting to drown a 3-year-old child at an apartment complex pool and making racist remarks, as reported by the police.

The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations identified the family as Muslim and Palestinian and urged state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident as a hate crime to ensure the safety of the Muslim family and community, according to a news release from the organization.

On May 19, the Euless Police Department responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex pool where witnesses reported that a woman who appeared to be intoxicated had tried to drown a child and engaged in an argument with the child’s mother, as stated in a police news release.

The woman, identified as Elizabeth Wolf, 42, was apprehended by officers as she attempted to leave and was arrested for public intoxication.

According to the victim’s mother, Wolf questioned her nationality and the relationship between her and the children playing at the pool. The mother, who was visibly Muslim and wearing a hijab and modest swimwear, was targeted by Wolf’s racist remarks, the council mentioned.

Wolf proceeded to make derogatory statements about the mother’s nationality and other racist comments, as detailed by the police.

The mother recounted that Wolf attempted to grab her 6-year-old son, who managed to pull away, resulting in a minor scratch. Wolf then forcibly submerged the mother’s 3-year-old daughter underwater, prompting the mother to rescue her child from the pool, where she was coughing up water.

Both children received medical clearance from the Euless Medics following the incident.

Expressing her distress, the mother, identified as Mrs. H, stated, “We are American citizens, originally from Palestine, and I don’t know where to go to feel safe with my kids. My country is facing a war, and we are facing that hate here. My daughter is traumatized; whenever I open the apartment door, she runs away and hides, telling me she is afraid the lady will come and immerse her head in the water again.”

Euless Police Department confirmed that Wolf has posted bail from Tarrant County Jail, with a bond set at $25,000 for the Attempted Capital Murder charge and $15,000 for the Injury to a Child charge, as stated by Capt. Brenda Alvarado.

Efforts are underway to address the incident, with the Council on American-Islamic Relations urging for a hate-crime investigation, increased bond, and constructive dialogue to combat rising Islamophobia, anti-Arab, and anti-Palestinian sentiments.

Texas Representative Salman Bhojani expressed his shock and disapproval of the alleged racist and Islamophobic incident, emphasising that hate has no place in Euless or anywhere in the state. He commended the prompt action taken by Euless PD and offered his support to the affected family.
