US President Joe Biden expressed his deep concern on Monday regarding the disturbing reports of a woman allegedly attempting to drown a Palestinian-American child at a pool in Texas.
Court records reveal that the woman, identified as Elizabeth Wolf, has been charged with capital murder following the incident that occurred in May and recently gained national attention.
The 42-year-old suspect reportedly approached a mother wearing a hijab at a suburban apartment pool near Dallas. She proceeded to inquire about the mother’s six-year-old son and three-year-old daughter, making racial remarks in the process, as per US media accounts.
According to reports, the woman grabbed the boy, who managed to free himself, and then targeted the girl, pushing her underwater.
“No child should ever experience a violent attack, and my thoughts are with the affected family,” stated President Biden on Monday.
“I am deeply troubled by the news of the attempted drowning of a 3-year-old Palestinian-American at a local pool,” he added.
Over the weekend, the Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) held a press briefing regarding the incident and called for a hate crimes investigation.
In a statement released by CAIR, the mother clarified that her family are American citizens of Palestinian descent.
This incident comes amid heightened tensions sparked by the conflict in Gaza, with emotions running high in the United States, particularly on college campuses where numerous protests have taken place.
The situation has also led to a rise in anti-Semitic and Islamophobic incidents across the country.
In a separate incident in November, a man shot and wounded three students of Palestinian origin in Vermont. Additionally, in early October, a six-year-old Muslim boy was fatally stabbed near Chicago in a crime directly linked to the Gaza conflict, according to police reports.
