The individual charged with the murder of Dieago Downey earlier this year had been released on statutory release when the tragic incident occurred, as per information from the Parole Board of Canada.
identified as Daniel Romeo Downey, aged 26, he had been granted release from prison in November 2022 after serving the majority of his 50-month sentence for various offences, including kidnapping, unlawful confinement, and being an accessory after the fact to murder.
These charges are connected to the case of the killing of Tylor McInnis, whose remains were discovered in a vehicle trunk in North Preston, N.S. back in August 2016. Shawntez Nico Downey, Daniel Downey’s older sibling, was found guilty of second-degree murder in the McInnis case.
Following the shooting of 18-year-old Dieago Downey, Daniel Downey’s statutory release was put on hold in March this year, with the parole board citing public safety as the reason for the suspension.
After his arrest, law enforcement officers carried out a search of Daniel Downey’s residence, revealing evidence of involvement in drug trafficking, according to the parole board.
Family Connection
It was reported that Downey was dissatisfied with the search conducted at his apartment.
“You expressed your grief over the loss of your family member—later identified as the victim of the shooting—and due to the suspension, you were unable to attend their funeral,” stated the parole board in its official decision.
“You maintained your innocence and believed that the search of your apartment was unwarranted.”
Although the nature of the relationship between Daniel and Dieago Downey is not explicitly stated by the board, Dieago Downey’s obituary mentions a brother named Daniel.
Reportedly, Daniel Downey informed the board of his desire to be released once more, with intentions to reside with his girlfriend and their child in the same apartment where law enforcement discovered drug-related items.
The parole board, however, deemed Downey’s release plan unfeasible.
“Due to your breach of conditions, it is essential for you to receive close supervision and monitoring to ensure accountability for your actions. Returning to your residence would not provide the necessary safeguards,” the board noted.
Daniel Downey is scheduled to appear in court next month to face allegations of murder and attempted murder in connection to Dieago Downey’s demise.
