HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A Holyoke resident has been taken into custody in connection with a tragic shooting incident that occurred on High Street earlier this month.
A spokesperson for the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office, Jim Leydon, has confirmed that the suspect in question is 27-year-old Brian Gonzalez from Holyoke. Gonzalez has been charged with the murder of 31-year-old David Rivera from Springfield.
The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday, June 1, around 2:00 a.m. Holyoke Police responded to a shooting report in the 400 block of High Street following a heated altercation. An adult male victim was discovered with gunshot wounds and was promptly taken to the hospital. The victim is currently in recovery from his injuries.
Later in the day, law enforcement officers located a second victim inside a vehicle parked on the side of the road near 300 High Street. The driver, identified as Rivera, had sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to a nearby medical facility. Unfortunately, Rivera succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
Following a thorough investigation, Gonzalez was identified as the primary suspect in the shooting incident. He was formally arraigned in Holyoke District Court on Monday and is currently being held without bail. Gonzalez is scheduled to appear in court again on July 18.
