A 25-year-old driver is facing multiple charges after a high-speed chase on Interstate 75 in Cobb County, Georgia. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, just before 2 p.m.
Georgia State Patrol (GSP) and Cobb County police were alerted to a distinctive orange Dodge pickup truck that was reportedly speeding and driving recklessly on I-75 southbound near mile marker 310.
Troopers located the truck two miles south of their position and attempted to stop it. The driver, identified as Braulio Lopez Cervantes, refused to pull over and a chase ensued.
During the pursuit, Cervantes drove erratically, weaving through traffic and using emergency lanes to bypass other vehicles. He also sideswiped a white Isuzu at mile marker 279 before continuing southbound on I-75.
Dangerous Maneuvers
As traffic congestion increased, Cervantes primarily used the left emergency lane for travel. When he reached the I-75 express toll lane near Wade Green Road, he allegedly crashed through gate arm barriers to access the express lane.
Due to the escalating risk to public safety, GSP decided to halt the pursuit but continued to monitor the truck’s movements. Cervantes was observed driving against traffic in the express lane between Big Shanty Road and Barrett Parkway, where he eluded authorities momentarily.
Arrest and Charges
Cobb County officers later located the abandoned truck in the I-75 express toll lane near mile marker 269. Cervantes attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended shortly after. He was taken into custody and transported to Bartow County Jail.
According to GSP, warrants have been issued for Cervantes on multiple charges related to the chase and reckless driving offences.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of obeying traffic laws to ensure the safety of all road users.
