Over the weekend, a total of eight people lost their lives and 18 others sustained injuries in a series of shootings across Chicago, according to the latest report from the Chicago Police Department. In addition to the shootings, another tragic incident occurred in Austin where a man was beaten to death following an argument.

Sunday’s Violence

On Sunday alone, fourteen individuals were shot, including two separate incidents on the same Little Village block that resulted in one fatality and three injuries. The first incident was reported after police responded to a ShotSpotter alert around 5 p.m. and discovered a 19-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to Stroger Hospital, the young man succumbed to his injuries. Two other individuals, a 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, sought treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Shortly after this incident, another shooting occurred on the 2800 block of South Kedzie Avenue where a 23-year-old man claimed to have engaged in a gunfire exchange with unknown assailants. Additionally, a 31-year-old man arrived at Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to his foot, presumably related to the same incident.

Tragically, a 16-year-old named Marvel White lost his life after being shot in the chest and legs during an argument on the 6500 block of South Racine Avenue. White was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Comparative Statistics

Despite the high number of casualties over the weekend, the total count of individuals shot was lower than the previous Father’s Day weekend, which saw a staggering 72 people shot, with eight fatalities.
