Authorities in Morgantown, West Virginia have charged a woman after a 1-year-old child was injured in an incident involving alcohol. The incident occurred on June 24, prompting a response from the Morgantown Police Department.
Details of the Incident
According to a criminal complaint, officers were called to Ruby Memorial Hospital for a report of public intoxication. Security at the hospital informed the police that a woman had brought in a 1-year-old child for medical attention after the infant had fallen and hit their head.
The woman, identified as Ashley Bennett, 36, of Morgantown, told officers that she was on the phone when the child, who was on her lap, fell onto the concrete floor. Bennett then took the injured child to the hospital for treatment.
Upon arrival at the hospital, officers noted that Bennett exhibited signs of intoxication, including a slow and unsteady walk, as well as swaying while standing still. They also detected the smell of alcohol on her breath.
Legal Action Taken
As a result of the incident, Bennett has been charged with child neglect resulting in injury. She was issued a $25,000 bond, of which she paid $2,500 to secure her release on the same day. Additionally, Bennett entered a plea of “not guilty” to the child neglect charge during the court proceedings.
It is worth noting that due to Bennett posting bond, her mugshot is not available on the West Virginia Regional Jails website at this time.
