The aftermath of the incident saw over 300 students returning to the school premises yesterday, clad in white and black attire as a mark of mourning for their departed peer. Teachers, administrators, and staff members also joined in the solemn tribute, standing in respectful silence to honour the memory of the deceased student.
The school’s director, who has held his position for nearly two years, expressed profound sorrow over the incident. He disclosed that the water cooler, which had been installed at the school for an extended period, was not in operation at the time of the tragic occurrence. Initially intending to repair the water cooler at an estimated cost of 100,000 baht, the director has now decided to dismantle it following the completion of the legal investigation.
In an emotional statement, the director shared, “I have never experienced anything like this before, I deeply regret what happened and wish it had never occurred. We need to move forward, but we will take care of the deceased student’s brother, who is currently in Grade 10, until he graduates from Grade 12.”
Furthermore, discussions have been initiated with the Director of Secondary Education Area 13, encompassing Trang and Krabi, regarding extending support to the deceased student’s brother up to the university level. This compassionate gesture is part of the school’s commitment to easing the burden of the grieving family as much as possible.
The day of the incident was marked by stormy weather, with the area around the water cooler being damp from rainfall, leading to an electrical leakage that resulted in the tragic outcome. All relevant electrical connections have since been severed to ensure the safety of the students.
Addressing water consumption concerns, the school has transitioned to providing bottled water from its welfare shop, priced at 4 baht per bottle, due to the subpar quality of the tap water on the premises, which contains elevated levels of limestone and rust. The director emphasized the school’s dedication to prioritizing the safety and well-being of all students moving forward.
Following the incident, educational authorities have issued a directive for all schools in the vicinity to discontinue the use of water coolers until safety assessments are conducted. The autopsy confirmed that the student, identified as Vayu, succumbed to electrocution from the water cooler, leaving the school community grappling with the shock and sorrow of losing a young life in a sudden and preventable manner.
