He was surfing off Goat Island, also known as Mokuauia, near Laie, Hawaii — approximately 32 miles north of Honolulu — when he was found at 1 p.m., officials informed the Star-Advertiser.

Rescuers were able to bring him to shore using a jet ski.

Authorities confirmed that Perry was the victim after notifying his immediate family.

“Tamayo Perry was a universally adored lifeguard, well-known on the North Shore, a professional surfer with global recognition,” stated acting Ocean Safety Chief Kurt Lager.

“Tamayo’s charisma was infectious, and as much as people adored him, he cherished everyone else even more.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Tamayo’s family and to the entire lifeguard Ohana. We kindly ask for privacy for his family at this time.”

Mayor Rick Blangiardi described Perry’s passing as a “tragic loss.”

“Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected… a valued member of our Ocean Safety team; it’s incredibly difficult to comprehend, so we simply want to show our respect to our team.

“I hope everyone extends their best wishes to his family and honours and respects the situation.”

Jason Bitzer, a friend, penned a tribute to Perry on Facebook, expressing, “The memories we shared! My brother in Christ, I love you mate! Tamayo, I won’t come to terms with this until I reunite with you in heaven.”

Perry worked as an instructor for the Oahu Surfing Experience.

His profile on the OSE website mentions that he had roles in several films such as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Blue Crush, and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.

“I have been surfing professionally for over 15 years and I got paid for surfing the deadliest wave in the world (Pipeline),” Perry shared in his bio.

Reflecting on a near-death incident while surfing a massive wave, Perry stated, “Several years ago, while surfing Pipeline on the Extra Large format, I was involved in a freak accident that turned into a near-fatal experience.

“The incident all happened due to someone else’s lack of awareness.”

Perry highlighted that he drew lessons from that experience, motivating him to educate others on surfing etiquette and safety.

Emergency services believe the man may have suffered multiple possible shark bites.

Earlier this year, an 11-year-old girl was attacked by a shark as it clung onto her foot in Oahu.

The girl reportedly sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being bitten on her left foot on Saturday, March 2, just before 1:30 p.m., as reported by NBC News.

Officials stated that the girl was near the shore, swimming in the water when the incident occurred.

“A witness described spotting a small reef shark in the area,” the Honolulu Emergency Services Department mentioned in a statement.
