On Sunday afternoon, tragedy struck as professional lifeguard and pipeline surfer Tamayo Perry was attacked by a shark while surfing off the coast of the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Perry, known for his roles in movies like “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Blue Crush”, succumbed to his injuries despite the efforts of emergency services.

Authorities were alerted to the incident at Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore around 1 p.m. Lifeguards swiftly responded and brought Perry to shore on a jetski, but he was tragically pronounced dead shortly after. Shark warnings were promptly issued in the area following the attack.
A Hero Remembered
Tamayo Perry, a 49-year-old veteran lifeguard with Honolulu Ocean Safety, was a beloved figure in the surfing community. Honolulu Ocean Safety Acting Chief Kurt Lager described him as “a lifeguard loved by all”.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi paid tribute to Perry’s bravery and dedication to serving the community. Perry’s contributions as a lifeguard and professional surfer will always be remembered.
Legacy and Contributions
Born and raised on Oahu, Perry rose to prominence in the surfing world after winning the Pipe Masters Trials in 1999. Together with his wife Emilia, he ran a surf school called Oahu Surfing Experience, where he shared his passion for safe surfing practices and etiquette.
Despite facing challenges, including a near-fatal head injury during a surfing competition, Perry remained committed to his craft. In addition to his surfing career, Perry also had acting credits to his name, with appearances in shows like “Hawaii Five-0” and the movie “The Big Bounce”.
