Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A professional lifeguard and pipeline surfer who also appeared in movies like “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Blue Crush” tragically lost his life after being attacked by a shark while surfing off the coast of the island of Oahu in Hawaii on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities were alerted to the incident around 1 p.m. when Honolulu Ocean Safety Services and other emergency services received a distress call about a surfer who had sustained multiple shark bites at Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore.

Lifeguards swiftly responded and were able to bring the victim, identified as 49-year-old Tamayo Perry, to shore on a jetski. Despite their efforts, Perry was pronounced dead shortly after reaching the shore, as confirmed by Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department during a news conference.

Following the tragic attack, shark warnings were promptly issued in the surrounding area to alert other beachgoers and surfers of the potential danger.

A Beloved Waterman and Lifeguard

Tamayo Perry, an 8-year veteran lifeguard with Honolulu Ocean Safety, was well-known both locally and internationally for his professional surfing skills. Honolulu Ocean Safety Acting Chief Kurt Lager described Perry as “a lifeguard loved by all.”

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi paid tribute to Perry in a Facebook post, praising him as a “well-known North Shore waterman” who embodied bravery, commitment, and a deep sense of duty in serving the community.

Surfline, a California-based surf forecasting and news website, revealed that Perry, who was born and raised on Oahu, gained recognition in the surfing world after winning the Pipe Masters Trials in 1999.

Perry and his wife, Emilia, operated a surf school called Oahu Surfing Experience, where they were dedicated to imparting safe surfing practices and etiquette to their students.

A Tragic Loss for the Surfing Community

Perry’s passion for surfing transcended his professional life, as he also dabbled in acting with credits in popular TV shows and movies such as “Hawaii Five-0” and “The Big Bounce.”

Despite the inherent risks associated with his sport, Perry remained committed to promoting safety and awareness after surviving a near-fatal head injury caused by a surfboard during a competition.

According to Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources, the state has witnessed four shark incidents this year, with most involving surfers. While shark attacks are rare in Hawaii, a small percentage can prove fatal.

The tragic loss of Tamayo Perry has sent shockwaves through the surfing community, highlighting the dangers that surfers face in their pursuit of the perfect wave.
