JEFFERSON HILLS, Pa. (Gray News) – A 3-year-old child is in critical condition after being left unattended in a motel room and subsequently being hit by a car.
The incident occurred at the Econo Lodge in Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania. The Jefferson Hills Police Department received a call on Saturday evening regarding a child being struck by a vehicle.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that the 3-year-old had wandered out of the motel and into the northbound lanes of Route 51, where they were hit by a passing car.
Investigations revealed that the child’s mother, identified as Shawnae Galberth, had left the 3-year-old and another 2-year-old child unattended in the motel room. The children managed to get out of the room and onto the road, leading to the tragic accident.
The injured child was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The driver who struck the child remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities in their investigation.
As a result of the incident, Shawnae Galberth was taken into police custody on two counts of felony endangering the welfare of children. She was subsequently transported to the Allegheny County Jail pending further legal proceedings.
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of supervising young children at all times, especially in potentially dangerous environments such as busy roads.
