A man was taken into police custody in the early hours of Saturday morning after he was caught trying to drown his children on a beach in West Haven, Connecticut. The incident occurred on Ocean Avenue and Dawson Avenue, where a police officer patrolling the area noticed an SUV on the beach just after 2:30 a.m.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer heard screams coming from the vicinity. Upon closer inspection, the officer saw a man and two young children in the water. The man, later identified as 41-year-old Romney Desronvil from Queens, New York, appeared to be intentionally trying to drown the children as he continued to drift further away while screaming at the approaching officer to stay back.
Additional officers and firefighters from the West Shore Fire Department joined the rescue efforts, with the first officer on the scene managing to reach the children and apprehend Desronvil. Life-saving measures were performed on the children before they were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Children in ICU, Suspect in Police Custody
In a social media update, West Haven police confirmed that both children, who are under 3 years old, were still in the ICU. Reports from the New Haven Register indicated that the children were showing signs of improvement but remained in critical condition. Desronvil is currently in police custody and is expected to face charges of two counts of attempted murder and two counts of risk of injury.
During a press conference, officials praised the swift response of the patrol officers, firefighters, and medical personnel, highlighting the collaborative efforts that led to the apprehension of Desronvil and the immediate medical attention provided to the children. The case remains under investigation at this time as authorities work to gather more information about the incident.
