A change.org petition opposing gender-neutral toilets and pronouns, which garnered 1,300 signatures before being removed, fueled further discrimination and intolerance towards non-binary individuals. Facebook posts discussing the petition at a school board meeting in May remain active, with one parent deeming non-binary children at school as a “safety issue”.
Mortellus expressed their sadness and anger at the situation, feeling their family had been unfairly vilified. As a celebrated author of books on necromancy and paganism, they emphasized the importance of understanding and supporting non-binary children. They clarified that they had simply sought a good education and equal rights for their children, not special treatment.
Furthermore, Mortellus highlighted the role of religion in the controversy, emphasizing their pagan beliefs which prioritize self-expression over imposed beliefs.
