Accident – Death – Obituary News : In the course of just a fortnight this month, two individuals riding bicycles in designated bike lanes in the City of Cambridge have tragically lost their lives after being struck and killed by truck drivers.

These incidents have occurred following a contentious vote by the Cambridge City Council in April to postpone the installation of safer bike lanes on several streets in the city.

The most recent fatality took place on Friday morning, around 8:20 a.m., at the junction of Hampshire Street and Portland Street near Kendall Square. Cambridge police, following a preliminary investigation, believe that both the driver of a box truck and the victim were travelling eastbound on Hampshire Street when the truck turned right onto Portland Street, colliding with the victim. The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Minh-Thi Nguyen, a graduate student of experimental physics at MIT. The perpetrator remains unidentified, but Cambridge Police have confirmed that they stayed at the scene of the incident, with investigations ongoing.

Just two weeks prior, another tragic incident occurred when a truck driver struck and killed a cyclist on Mt. Auburn Street near Harvard Square. On Friday, June 7, around 4:30 p.m., the operator of another box truck collided with and killed 55-year-old Kim Staley of Naples, Florida. Police reports suggest that Staley and the truck driver were both travelling east on Mount Auburn Street when the driver made a right turn across the separated bike lane onto DeWolfe Street.

Hampshire Street, known as one of the region’s busiest bike routes, and Mount Auburn Street both feature flexpost-separated bike lanes. In order to make a right turn from either of these streets, the truck drivers involved in these tragic incidents would have had to cross the bike lane.

The intersection of Mt. Auburn and DeWolfe benefits from additional protection in the form of a traffic signal, which is designed to only permit right turns for motor vehicles while bicycles are held by a red light. Similarly, the intersection of Hampshire and Portland also has a traffic signal, but lacks a dedicated phase to separate right-turning motor vehicles from bike traffic.

In response to these heartbreaking events, Cambridge Bike Safety has organised a vigil for the two victims, scheduled for Monday afternoon from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. on the steps of Cambridge City Hall.

Following the council’s decision to delay safety projects on several key streets in Cambridge, Cambridge Bike Safety has published a comprehensive set of recommendations for the city to enhance the safety of its intersections.

Chris Cassa of Cambridge Bicycle Safety emphasised the importance of prioritising safety projects, stating “This should serve as a stark reminder that safety concerns are widespread throughout the city. Rather than postponing safety initiatives, we should be expediting them.”.
