Tragedy struck in Commerce Township when a 40-year-old man, Joshua Steven Moomaw, succumbed to injuries sustained in a devastating motorcycle crash. The incident occurred when Moomaw, riding a Harley-Davidson with his 41-year-old wife as a passenger, was waiting to turn left from northbound Wixom Road onto Stratford Villa Way on June 16. At around 9:15 p.m., a minivan struck them from behind, resulting in the fatal injuries.

It is reported that neither Moomaw nor his wife were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. Although his wife was hospitalized for her injuries, she has since been discharged. The driver of the minivan, who was wearing a seatbelt, emerged unharmed from the collision. Investigations by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office revealed that neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the tragic accident.

Recent Fatal Motorcycle Crashes in Oakland County

This incident marks the fifth fatal motorcycle crash in Oakland County in recent weeks, highlighting the importance of road safety for motorcyclists. Other incidents include:

  • On June 18, a 32-year-old Redford Township man lost his life in a collision with a Ford Explorer at the intersection of Eight Mile Road and Grand River Avenue in Farmington Hills. He was not wearing a helmet at the time.
  • On June 14, a 60-year-old Orion Township motorcyclist perished after colliding with a car that turned in front of him in Brandon Township. The motorcyclist was also not wearing a helmet, while his 12-year-old grandson, who was a passenger wearing a helmet, survived the crash.
  • On May 16, a 57-year-old Saginaw man met with a fatal accident after colliding with a car that turned in front of him in Commerce Township. Like the others, he too was not wearing a helmet.
  • On May 1, a 66-year-old Orion Township man lost his life in a collision with a car in Oxford Township. The wearing of a helmet in this incident remains unknown.

The string of fatal motorcycle crashes underscores the need for heightened caution and adherence to safety measures while on the road. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the crashes to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigations by contacting the sheriff’s office at 248-858-4950.
