WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The trial date for Jason Hopinka, the man accused of a stabbing incident on Wausau’s west side in 2023, has been rescheduled. Originally set for mid-July, the trial will now take place from December 10th to the 12th following the rejection of a plea offer by Hopinka’s defense team.

Court records indicate that the 40-year-old defendant opted to proceed to trial rather than accept the state’s final plea bargain. Hopinka stands accused of stabbing another individual inside a residence on 4th Avenue in Wausau. Upon police arrival at the scene, both the victim and suspect had left. The victim later presented at a local hospital for treatment, while Hopinka was apprehended in rural Marathon County a few hours after the incident.

The victim sustained a stab wound to the face but survived the attack. Hopinka faces potential imprisonment of up to nearly two decades if convicted on the two felony charges against him. A jury status hearing is scheduled for November 12th to address any pre-trial matters.

This is not the first time the trial has been rescheduled, with a previously set trial date in mid-February also being postponed. The latest delay follows the rejection of the plea deal, indicating a willingness by Hopinka and his legal team to contest the charges in court.
