Jacob Alonzo : Man Throws Pickaxe at Police in West Lubbock: Officer-Involved Shooting.

LUBBOCK, Texas

The Lubbock Police Department in Texas has revealed new details following a tragic incident that unfolded during a domestic disturbance on Sunday evening, resulting in a fatal officer-involved shooting. The individual who lost their life has been identified as Jacob Alonzo, aged 38.

Authorities had received a distress call reporting a domestic dispute in the 3000 block of Valencia Avenue at 8:37 p.m. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers sustained any injuries during the incident.

Law enforcement officials disclosed that the initial call was made concerning an intoxicated individual wielding a baseball bat and causing property damage within a residence. The caller had sought refuge in a bathroom with three children.

Upon the arrival of two officers at the scene, Alonzo was observed outside the property, striking a vehicle with a pickaxe. Despite repeated verbal commands from the officer to desist, Alonzo persisted and the officer was compelled to discharge his firearm. Even after sustaining gunshot wounds, Alonzo continued to advance towards the officers, ultimately hurling the pickaxe at one of them.

Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the officers and the arrival of Emergency Medical Services, Alonzo succumbed to his injuries. The Forensic Investigation Unit of the Lubbock Police Department, alongside the Office of Professional Standards, swiftly responded to the scene to conduct a comprehensive investigation.

The officer involved in the incident has been a part of the Lubbock Police Department since February 2023 and has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with government protocol.
