A Canton resident, Edward Irwin III, is currently in police custody facing multiple charges after allegedly shooting at a police officer during a pursuit in East Canton in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Charges Faced by Edward Irwin III

According to a statement released by the East Canton Police Department, Edward Irwin III has been charged with the following offences:

  • Attempted felonious assault on a police officer
  • Fleeing and eluding
  • Felony possession of drugs

The Chase and Arrest

The incident unfolded when an East Canton officer attempted to conduct a routine traffic stop at the intersection of Wood Street and Nassau Street at approximately 12:05 a.m. on Sunday. Gunshots were heard by the officer coming from a distance of about 100 yards on East Nassau Street. The suspect, later identified as Irwin, was seen riding a motorcycle and fled the scene, leading to a pursuit.

During the chase on State Route 44, Irwin allegedly fired shots at the pursuing officer. Despite the gunfire, the officer remained unharmed and continued the pursuit. Irwin attempted to evade capture by turning onto Wood Street via Noble Street but lost control of his motorcycle in a gravel driveway. After a brief attempt to flee on foot, Irwin was apprehended by a K-9 officer from Hartville.

Further Investigation and Charges

Following his arrest, it was discovered that Irwin had numerous outstanding warrants for felony charges. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into Stark County Jail. The East Canton Police Department is currently conducting an ongoing investigation into the alleged shooting, and Irwin may face additional charges as a result.
