An Allendale motorist has been charged with driving under the influence and causing a fatal collision with a cyclist in Ottawa County, Michigan. The tragic incident occurred on June 19 on Fillmore Street, where the driver, identified as Jehnel Jean Pore, veered into the opposite lane and struck a 59-year-old bicyclist, Douglas Sjoerdsma, from Grandville. Despite wearing a helmet, Sjoerdsma sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Grand Rapids, where he later succumbed to his wounds.
Investigation and Charges
Authorities were called to the scene at around 8:41 a.m. on the day of the accident near 28th Avenue in Georgetown Township. It was determined that Pore, a 39-year-old woman, was driving eastbound on Fillmore when she crossed the centre line and collided with Sjoerdsma on the westbound shoulder. Pore was also injured in the crash but only suffered minor injuries.
Pore was initially facing charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury and a moving violation causing injury. However, following the death of Sjoerdsma, the prosecutor’s office is expected to amend these charges accordingly. Pore was arraigned in district court last week and is currently being held in Ottawa County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
